Ekium at the UNOC 2025 conference

Advancing maritime decarbonization with ammonia as fuel!

On June 11, 2025, we had the privilege of participating in the EVOLEN panel discussion titled “Carbon-free fuels for the maritime transport of tomorrow?” at the UNOC (United Nations Ocean Conference) in Nice.

During this event, Gwenaëlle BENOIT, Innovation Project Manager, gave a presentation on the topic “Ammonia as a Marine Fuel – Challenges and Recommendations.” This presentation highlighted Ekium’s strong commitment to supporting the maritime sector’s transition to sustainable energy sources. The preparation of this presentation was made possible thanks to the valuable contribution of Pierre-Yves CHEVALIER, an expert in naval processes at Ekium.

Key points of the presentation:

  • Analysis of the potential of alternative fuels, with a particular focus on ammonia, to achieve decarbonization goals by 2050.

  • Overview of the technical, regulatory, and operational challenges associated with using ammonia as a marine fuel.

  • Presentation of innovative solutions developed by Ekium to accelerate the energy transition in maritime transport.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to Evolen, represented by Emmanuel VULLIERME, for their invitation and for organizing such a high-quality panel. We also extend our gratitude to our fellow panelists for their insightful contributions and engaging discussions:

  • Adrien CARPENTIER (MGH),

  • Jérôme MAJCHER (IFP Énergies Nouvelles),

  • Laurent HAMOU (Elengy),

  • Arthur PIAZZA (GTT).

Ekium remains fully committed to working alongside its partners to accelerate the energy transition in the maritime sector and develop practical and sustainable solutions for the future.
